It's been a while since I've posted, but I'm still around! It's been an exciting start to the new year with lots of new students and gigs.
Last month I held a songwriting workshop at a primary school. We looked at identifying different instruments in songs, what song structures are and some great ways to get lyric writing. I also offer songwriting sessions 1 on 1 to either get you started or get your songs where you want them to be! I'm busy gigging with Absolute Jukebox Duo as usual and have some gigs coming up for my own music which is always exciting. Its been a blast playing at parties and weddings, and I use the skills I teach in my lessons every time I perform. If this is something you want to get into then, as with most things, I can tailor sessions towards meeting your goals. Happy playing!

I thought another post might be helpful to those looking for a potential guitar teacher, and for parents or students wanting to see what I'm teaching in my lessons. Here's a list of some of the songs I have taught this year - let me know if there's any songs you think should be on my list!
These songs all vary quite a bit in difficulty and style! This is important so I have repertoire to teach at every level of a student's ability to challenge them and keep it fun! Using your ears to feel what works is a great skill to have and shouldn't be overlooked - but knowing why it works and sounds good is also important!
It can help us understand so much more from our favourite songs and how to create the same sounds ourselves. It doesn't have to be complicated either - practical guitar theory can be taught fairly quickly and immediately open your eyes to what you are playing. In our guitar lessons, we teach practical guitar theory alongside your learning, it'll never slow you down - only give you more options! Answer: Nope! If you set aside some time a few times a week to practice, you will improve no matter when you start.
Plus it's a great way to maintain or improve your memory and motor skills! January saw a lot of new students starting - some for the first time and others who made a resolution to pick it back up again! It's been great to see such a large range of ages and abilities, definitely keeps me on my toes!
Some songs we've been learning in the last few weeks: 'Sultans of Swing' by Dire Straits - great for practicing small phrases and learning licks for soloing; 'I See Fire' by Ed Sheeran - a really nice acoustic piece that shows us techniques like hammer-ons and pull-offs. I'm really looking forward to see how far everyone will be progressing in 2022. Happy Playing, Ben I've had a great month teaching four new students - all ranging ages and ability! Definitely a lot of people looking to start a new hobby, or return to an old one, since the recent lockdowns.
Some songs I have been looking at so far with a couple of them: 'Love Me Do' and 'Knockin' on Heavens Door' - these have been great for those starting out or looking to improve their rhythm. Also had some great ideas from students of artists/songs they want to play - if you're thinking of joining us, I always love to hear what you'd love to be able to perform or play along to on guitar. Happy playing, Ben |
